Old Halloween Ain’t What She Used to Be

November 4, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

The Halloween for 2013 has sure changed.  In the olden days – 2012 and before – hundreds of young costumed children would knock on my door in their cute Halloween costumes, yelling “trick or treat.”  Sometimes only one child would be at the door when answered; sometimes several.

Later in the evening, some of the “older” children would knock on the door with the same message, and they always received the same treat as the younger ones.

When my children were younger, we usually met the parents with a flask of Brandy Alexanders  – to ward off the chill of the evening, of course.   [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: Supannee House of Thai

November 2, 2013 by Judi Curry

Supannee House of Thai  (Second time around)
2907 Shelter Island Drive
San Diego, Ca 92106

By Judi Curry

Since there was so many responses to an earlier review in the OBRag suggesting that I visit the restaurant for the second time, my friend Eric and I did just that last Monday at lunch time.

As was the case before, we were greeted with smiles and taken to a seat. Because it was late, the restaurant only had two other tables filled when we arrived, and one other couple came in after us. (They close at 3:00pm and reopen at 5:00pm for dinner.)

We were given the same fish menu that we were given at dinner, but both of us elected to have something off of the lunch menu.   [Read more…]

Why I Am Not Voting for Nathan Fletcher

October 25, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

Several weeks ago I had the opportunity to meet David Alvarez at a “meet and greet” party. Although I walked into the meeting as a Mike Aguirre supporter, I was very impressed with the way David talked to the crowd; answered all questions without hemming and hawing, and told us his plans when he becomes the Mayor of San Diego.  Although not ready to endorse him over Mike Aguirre, I couldn’t help but feel that a vote for Mike is a wasted vote, and possibly a vote for Faulconer, my current representative on the City Council.

I decided before I could truly make up my mind about the candidates, I would like to hear Nathan Fletcher speak.  I don’t mean in a debate where the answers are canned and fluffy; but in a similar setting as the “meet and greet” for Alvarez.   [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: ‘BO-beau’ in Ocean Beach

October 19, 2013 by Judi Curry

BO-beau Kitchen + Bar
4996 W. Point Loma Ave.
Ocean Beach, CA 92107
619-224-2884

By Judi Curry

When I do a restaurant review, I try to stay within a certain price range , primarily because I live on a limited income. I had heard that the food at “BO-Beau” was very good, but was also told it was quite pricey. I am happy to say that the food WAS very good, and although more than I usually spend on a meal, was not that pricey compared to other restaurants of its quality.   [Read more…]

Point Loma Dems Meet and Greet David Alvarez

October 14, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

A “meet and greet”  was held Sunday  in Pt. Loma to introduce Point Loma Democrats and friends to David Alvarez, a candidate running for the position of Mayor of San Diego.

It was the first time that many of the attendees had ever met Mr. Alvarez, and there was great interest from the over 50 people in attendance in what he had to say, how he said it, and what he sees for the future of San Diego. He gave willingly of his time, and spent almost three hours answering every question asked.  It is interesting to note that at no time did he evade the questions, and from this observation was honest and sincere in what he said.

He stated that his leadership goal as the mayor of San Diego is to continue the community action that is so badly needed in San Diego.  He said that he would put the “neighborhoods” first and work on infrastructure so badly needed in our city today.   [Read more…]

An Introduction to North Park’s Latest Celebrity– Meet Sunny Rey

October 11, 2013 by Judi Curry

Author – “Quotes and Poems of a Nobody”

By Judi Curry

Not too long ago, I had a chance meeting with Sunny. And it didn’t start out all that well.

Sunny is the sister of Ian Rey, the young man that worked at Henry’s for over 14 years and was let go because of a missing jacket. I had been talking to another store about the possibility of Ian working there, and Sunny misunderstood my intentions. She thought I wanted to do a story – like the other media – when, in fact, I wanted to introduce Ian to the owners of Baron’s Market, where he now works.

After talking to Sunny and straightening out the reason I wanted to talk to Ian, I found her to be an absolutely delightful person; a poetess in her own right; on the upward path of becoming an entity of her own, writing, reading her poetry, etc. to a wide audience in San Diego. To say that she has a following in San Diego and beyond is mild compared to who she is and what she is becoming.   [Read more…]

Which is Worse – Holiday Catalogs or Requests for Monies to Fight the GOP House?

October 1, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

Several years ago, when first receiving holiday catalogs, I kept all of them to see how many I was sent in the six months prior to the actual holidays.  As I recall, it was over 160 and I felt sorry for my mail person who had to schlep all the catalogs from house to house for months. Since I am not a shopper, I never looked at those catalogs and finally threw them in my recycle bin just before the holidays.

Today (Sunday, September 29, 2013), I am not receiving catalogs but requests for money to help get the word out about the dastardly deed the Republican members of the House of Representative are doing to stop “Obamacare.”  Not that it matters, but I support Obamacare, and think that every representative that voted to shut down the government should be recalled immediately; their salary should stop; their health benefits should be removed and they should be run out of Washington.

With that said, I can’t help but be irked by the number of e-mails I am receiving asking for $3 to help the fight; more if I can afford it.  Sure, I will sign the petitions telling my Congresspeople what I think about their vote, but even if I could I would not donate monies to all of the groups asking for my help.   [Read more…]

PRIVACY? What Privacy?

September 28, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

Do you really think that you have privacy in your everyday doings? Do you really believe that no one knows when you are doing something you shouldn’t be doing? Do you really think that the good deeds you are doing are not noticed by someone?  Do you have any awareness of just how “unprivate” your life is?  Not only is “big brother” watching you, but so are his sisters and brothers, and it is a little unnerving.

A few examples:  Those of you that have read my articles in the past know that I have been experimenting with “on-line” dating for the past year.  I can’t say that all of the experiences that I have had have been bad, but a goodly number gave me fodder for the articles I have written for the SDFP and OBRag.  I have been very careful not to meet men at my home; and have met men at places where I am known by the workers in case I run into any problems. (I haven’t.)   [Read more…]

A Restaurant Review: Kono’s Surf Club in Pacific Beach

September 17, 2013 by Judi Curry

Konos jc frontKono’s Surf Club
704 Garnet Ave.
Pacific Beach, CA 92109
858-483-1669

It isn’t often that I leave Ocean Beach to try a restaurant in Pacific Beach, but today was an exception. We ended up at Kono’s Surf Club in PB.

Before we left the house, I had done some minor research on Kono’s and suggested we try having breakfast there. (It was 2:15pm). Ro checked her “Iphone” and found they were open until 4:00pm – so away we went.

I was afraid that since it was a Saturday they would be packed, but it turned out we had no trouble getting a table and placed our order with Martin – the most helpful order taker we had met in a long time.   [Read more…]

A Post-Labor Day Tribute To My Sister

September 3, 2013 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

Labor Day means a lot of different things to a lot of different people.  In my case, at the age of seven, the first time I knew about “Labor Day” was on September 2nd, 1946, because that was the day my mother went into labor with my sister, Andy. (Andrea Jane.)  The house was a flutter and my own governess was going to take care of my sister, leaving me for the first time in my life.

I was going to be “a big girl” now, and I no longer needed to have Nanny Parsons monitor my every move.  All of that was fine with me, except for one small thing – I did not know that my mother was pregnant.  I do not want to say that she kept it a secret from me – but it was not talked about in my presence.   [Read more…]

You Must Be a Speed Reader to go to Lindbergh Field

August 31, 2013 by Judi Curry

When was the last time you had to take someone to the airport? Or the last time you picked someone up? Have you been to the new airport – Terminal 2 – since they remodeled it into a highfalutin, gourmet-eating restaurant? If so, you know you have to be a speed reader to decipher the signs along Harbor Drive, especially while driving along at 50 miles-per-hour. Oh, you can’t? Well, you, my friend, are in trouble.   [Read more…]

Looking for Answers About Fort Rosecrans Cemetery

August 30, 2013 by Judi Curry

New Director Talks About Getting It Fixed Up, Finally

By Judi Curry

It has been three weeks since the new Director of Ft. Rosecrans Cemetery moved into his “lodge”.

When I asked him where I should meet him he told me “at the lodge.” It took me a minute to realize he meant the “private quarters.”

He is in a wonderful position because he had the caveat to not answer questions with a “I don’t know because I wasn’t here”.  But he always promised he’d find out.   [Read more…]

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years.
