Restaurant Review: Jade, Thai and Mandarin

March 5, 2014 by Judi Curry

Jade Thai and Mandarin
10330 Friars Road #104
San Diego, CA 92120

By Judi Curry

I have done several reviews of restaurants suggested by readers of the San Diego Free Press and/or the OBRag.  One of my readers – Michael – asked me if I had ever gone to the “Jade” before.  I knew where it was on Friars, and remembered eating there but not much about the cuisine.  So I called my friend Jim and asked him if he wanted to join me.  He drove all the way from Oceanside – that’s what friends do for friends – and we arrived at the restaurant at 5:30pm or so.

There were very few other patrons in the restaurant, and not many arrived after we did.  The two servers were delightful and made us feel right at home.  The female waitpersons name was “Angel” and she was; the male was “Nathaniel” and he was very helpful also.   [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: Antique Row Cafe

March 3, 2014 by Judi Curry

Antique Row Cafe
3002 Adams Ave.,
San Diego, CA 92116 (Normal Heights)
619-282-9750

By Judi Curry

Some birthdays just go on and on and on.  Particularly those birthdays that you would just as soon forget – like the one I had last week.  (And every day since!)

My neighbors asked to take me out for breakfast at any restaurant of my choosing. I remembered that years ago we went to the” Antique Row Café” and really enjoyed it.  That was my suggestion this time and Nancy and Stuart were willing to drive the distance and try it with me.

It hasn’t changed much since I was there 20+ years ago. They still have the charcoal drawings of many famous personalities on the walls; still dark; and still busy.   [Read more…]

Your Credit Card Has Been Compromised

February 27, 2014 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

I received an automated call this morning at 11:27 am. It went like this: “This is your credit card company calling. We are not trying to sell you anything but we think that your credit card has been compromised. We want to talk to either Robert Curry (so do I) or Judith Curry. If this is Robert Curry please press 1. If this is Judith Curry please press 2. If neither Robert Curry or Judith Curry is available, please press 3.”

Since I am “Judith Curry” I pressed 2.

“So that we can be sure we have the right person, please enter your 5 digit zip code.” I entered my zip code.

“Please hold for the next available representative.”

There were many thoughts that went through my mind during the 2 minute hold time. Was I being scammed again? How could they figure out who I was by my zip code? I just used my credit card moments ago to purchase new cards for my new business. Was that a scam? I decided that I would ask the questions when the representative came back on line.   [Read more…]

One Woman’s Thoughts on ‘A Day of Honor’

February 24, 2014 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

At the risk of alienating a lot of people, I am absolutely incensed by the City Council naming a day after Peggy Shannon for the “harassment suffered by the mayor of San Diego.”  A day in her honor? For what?  What did she do that was so honorable?  Stop a thief? Adopt orphan children; Save people from a burning building? Fund a scholarship for children that can’t afford to go to college?

She is having a “day of honor” so that the city does not have to pay out any money from the harassment of the former mayor?  She is having a “day of honor” because she told the world about the mayor’s flirting with her? She is having a “day of honor” because she “. . . had butterflies in her stomach because she didn’t know what was going to happen the next time the mayor came to her desk”?   [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: Carlsbad’s Village Grill

February 17, 2014 by Judi Curry

Village Grill
2833 State Street
Carlsbad, CA  92008
760-729-3601

By Judi Curry

Once again a few members of my support group decided to hop on the Coaster and spend the day in Carlsbad.  We did this last year and really enjoyed ourselves and thought it was time for an encore.

The Coaster left the Old Town Trolley Station at 9:50am and by the time we arrived in Carlsbad we were hungry.  We decided to stop for breakfast before we did anything else, and stopped at the “Village Grill” within shouting distance of where we got off the Coaster.

The restaurant is a funky, outdoor place and when we looked inside there was a small counter and one table indoors. The chefs cooked just behind the counter.   [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: Fred’s Mexican Cafe- Too Hot and Not-So-Hot

February 11, 2014 by Judi Curry

Fred’s Mexican Cafe
Old Town Location
2470 San Diego Ave
San Diego, CA 92110
619-858-TACO (8226)

By Judi Curry

Frequently we get into a rut by going to the same restaurant time and time again because we like the food, the atmosphere, the price, etc.  Every few months or so members of my support group attend the play at the Cygnet Theater in Old Town – thanks to one of our members ushering there often – and we always go to lunch (or dinner) before – or after – the play.

Sunday we saw the 3pm performance of Maple and Vine and decided to have lunch before the play.  (BTW – the play was an interesting one; the plot different than most plays put on by the Cygnet, and quite enjoyable.)

Ro, one of our members who just happens to be the reason for our theater outings, had a discount ticket at “Fred’s Mexican Café” and we decided to go there instead of the regular places we usually eat.   [Read more…]

The Women of the San Salvador

February 10, 2014 by Judi Curry

Eager volunteers work long hours recreating Cabrillo’s galleon at Spanish Landing

By Judi Curry

The Maritime Museum of San Diego is building  a $5 million replica of San Salvador, the galleon Cabrillo guided here in 1542 when he became the first European to explore what is today known as San Diego Bay.  The museum has dedicated  a construction site for the ship which was donated by the San Diego Port District on public land at Spanish Landing, 2 miles from where its main collection of historic vessels are docked on North Harbor Drive.

Thirty-five months have passed since the keel was first laid in March of 2011. This  three-masted galleon, totaling 88 feet of beautiful wood will weigh 200,000 tons when completed.  Plans call for the ship to open as a paid attraction in 2014, when it joins the museum’s other ships at the nearby embarcadero.

Who is building this large replica of the San Salvador, you ask?  There are some ten paid workers, and  many volunteers that devote a goodly part of their week to watching history taking place.    [Read more…]

Thoughts About The Super Bowl – 2014

February 3, 2014 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

Several years ago, as a new widow, I wrote an article about how lonesome it was to watch the Super Bowl without a companion to discuss it with.  I have made it a point from that time on to always be with friends when the biggest game of the season plays.  Today was no exception.

As the oldest of my group today, I was interested in the other  comments about the commercials and the Half-Time shows.  There was quite an age gap between us, and I was curious about their responses. As a group, there was total agreement that the game lacked excitement.

Since I was the only one that wanted the Seahawks to win, I found that I had to temper my enthusiasm when the Seahawks scored the safety; when the return man from Seattle ran the ball the length of the football field; when Denver fumbled and the Seahawks recovered – how many times was that? – you get the picture.   [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: El Cuervo Taco Shop

January 24, 2014 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

Restaurant Review
EL CUERVO TACO SHOP
110 West Washington St.
San Diego, CA 92103
619-295-9713

Several weeks ago I did a restaurant review of “Ortiz’s” in Pt. Loma.  Michael, one of the readers of the review wrote that he thought that “El Cuervo” was one of the best Mexican restaurants in town.  In fact, he said, “ . . . El Cuervo Taco Shop in Hillcrest.  Everything cooked to order and prepared as if grandmother was in the kitchen.   The Veggie Burrito ROCKS!!!  The Carnitas Burrito and the Pibil Burrito are both excellent too.  Have fun.”

“Go.  Now.  Eat!”   [Read more…]

Jake Ducey: Finding His Own Path

January 22, 2014 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

San Diego has some remarkable native-grown youth. We probably hear about many of them in a negative way, and it is always so uplifting to meet one that is making a difference in the world. When I sat down to talk with Jake Ducey I found that it was so exciting, so much fun, that I didn’t want it to end.

Who is Jake Ducey, you ask? He is an extremely tall – think basketball tall – handsome young man of 22, born and raised in Encinitas, with long curly hair, a smile that goes from ear to ear, blue eyes that sparkle with mischief, enthusiasm, and sincerity. He has gone from a drug filled life and a basketball scholarship to an author, a script writer, a motivational speaker, and an actor that will soon be a household name all over the world. He has written a book that appeared on the Amazon best seller for weeks – “Into the Wind” – and is writing his second book to be published in 2015 having to do with setting your principles and going after them. In his second book he interviewed 27 people and has written about their successes and how they were obtained.   [Read more…]

On-Line Dating, The Saga Continues…Oh, And Who Is This Man?

January 21, 2014 by Judi Curry

By Judi Curry

Those of you that have followed my “on-line” dating experiences probably thought that after the “Thomas” episode I was finished with my research project. Actually, I thought I was also, until I received a notification from “OKCupid” that I had been matched with a man that they thought I would have a lot in common with.  His name – at least the name he was using on their site was “Mohitasaurus.”  When he wrote to me, however, he said his name of “Jerry Shawn” and that he lives in the 92108 zip code.

Granted, 92108 encompasses a wide territory – Mission Valley and some surroundings.  How similar it was to Thomas who told me he lived in Imperial Beach.  Rather than bore you with the details of his writings, I am going to copy them verbatim for you to read. I did not correct his spelling errors. (Note: You still might be bored!)   [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: Ortiz’s Taco Shop

January 11, 2014 by Judi Curry

Ortiz’s Taco Shop
3704 Voltaire
San Diego, CA 92107
619-222-4476

By Judi Curry

Interim Mayor Todd Gloria has promised to send authentic Mexican food to Denver Mayor Michael Hancock in the event that the Chargers lose the game this Sunday. As an aficionado of such cuisine, I was amazed to see the three restaurants Gloria selected: Ortiz’s Taco Shop in Point Loma, Lolita’s Taco Shop in Kearny Mesa and Mama Testa Taqueria in Hillcrest.

So I called two of my friends – Ro and Irene – and asked them if they would like to join me in reviewing these three restaurants – one at a time, of course.   [Read more…]

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
