Restaurant Review: Seasons 52

I have heard about this restaurant ever since it opened.  It prides itself on items that are less than 475 calories, no matter what it is, from flatbreads to appetizers, to small salads, entrée salads, fish and seafood, poultry and meat, and even their desserts.

When my daughter Michele called and asked me if I wanted to join her and my grandson Cody I jumped at the chance.  Cody made reservations on-line, and our wait for a table was less than 5 minutes, even though we were early and one person that was going to join us was unable to do so.  Both Cody and Michele had been here before.

The following is taken directly from their on-line page:  “We use natural cooking techniques such as wood-fire grilling, brick-oven cooking, and caramelizing vegetables to let the natural flavors shine through.  And we execute precision with seasoning, and oil with control and care to ensure just the right amount is used to bring out the great flavor profiles.  An added benefit to this style is that our menu items are naturally lower in calories.  In fact, we make a promise that nothing on our menu is over 475 calories.  The result is great tasting, highly satisfying food that just so happens to be good for you!”  NOTE:  They do not have butter in the kitchen nor on the table!   [Read more…]

Restaurant Review: Pear’s Thai Cuisine

My children frequently do not like to go out to a restaurant with me if they think there is a possibility that I may review that restaurant. However, my youngest, Stephanie, has been touting “Pear’s” restaurant ever since they opened and was time to see what she was talking about.

The restaurant was hard to find. It is one block behind Aero Drive – even though the address is on Aero – and skirts John Montgomery Drive to the north. It is actually off of “Gibbs” street in a small strip mall that is easy to overlook. In spite of the location, I was amazed at the number of people that came to the restaurant to pick up take out orders. In the hour that we were there, I counted 7 take-out orders, plus the walk-ins that actually ate in the restaurant. Perhaps that is because you can order on-line, and they also have a delivery service. The restaurant has six tables, with most seating 4 patrons, although there are two for two people only.   [Read more…]

My Grandma’s High on Weed

My grandma has a case of shingles,
She hurts terribly bad,
I wish I could do something for her,
It makes me extremely sad.
Grandma went to her doctor,
Who gave her a strong pain pill,
But all that it managed to do for her,
Was to make her feel more ill.
Grandma went back to the doctor,
Begging for some relief,
The doctor said to get a weed card
And then go buy some leaf.
So Grandma looked on Google’s list
To find the closest place,
Drove herself to the parking lot –
Of course it was owned by ACE.

The OB Hippie House Dedicates a Peace Pole

To call this beautiful remodeled house on the south side of Ocean Beach a “hippie house”  truly does it an injustice. The new owner – Scott – has put a great deal of money into the house to make it liveable, and the fact that it is not the “normal” Pt. Loma residence is incidental.  But….it is gaining fame, even though Scott and his significant other Layla, have just recently moved in.

First of all the views are spectacular.  The scenery changes from minute to minute. What were high waves an hour ago are small little ripples now; the pelicans fly over going both north and south. The surfers are not there today – waiting the 72 hours after the rain – before dotting the scenery with their black wetsuits and multicolored surfboards.  So why were we there this morning, braving the cold and wind, standing outside looking at a pole set in concrete , albeit in a beautiful design?

Today, at the beginning of the winter solstice, Scott was dedicating one of his two Peace Poles in an informal ceremony. How familiar are you with “Peace Poles”?  They symbolize the oneness of humanity and the common wish for a world at peace.   [Read more…]

“Weight loss” has been the buzz phrase for years. Seldom are people happy with what they weigh; what they look like; how tall or short they are; their cup size; etc. And, thanks to Dr. Oz and his programs, many women – and men, too – have tried a variety of weight loss remedies that are “guaranteed” – well, sort of – to take the weight off whether you exercise or not. He has touted Raspberry Keytones, Green Coffee, and the latest – a Pure Garcinia Cambogia.

As an overweight, older woman who wants to look better to attract a younger man, I have tried all three of the above. After all, if it worked for Oprah, it should work for me.   [Read more…]

There’s No Fool Like an Old Fool: The Final Chapter – Not

For months I have been experimenting with “on-line” dating. As each of the paid sites have finished, I have not renewed my membership. However, there are two dating sites that I still frequent, because there is no money needed for membership. I want to talk specifically about OK Cupid.

Loneliness is getting the better of me. There are days that I am so blue I wonder why I should ever get out of bed. I am so close to completing my third cookbook, yet I have not completed a chapter in it for more than 11 months. I have missed deadline after deadline. The book I am writing about on-line dating is waiting for its “final chapter” – which I thought I had just hours ago. But, alas, I have been had, and I don’t like that feeling either.

I was sent a message from Tom on OK Cupid. He said he was a widower; both his wife and his daughter were killed by a drunk driver more than five years ago. He had not dated since, but felt it was time to begin his life again. I commiserated with him, because I had lost my husband four years ago and know the emptiness that widowhood brings. Thus began daily, sometimes hourly conversations, with Tom.   [Read more…]

Progress Made at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery

On November 10, 2010, I wrote my first article in the OBrag.org  about the trees being cut down at Ft. Rosecrans.  I asked who was cutting down the trees and why.  The editor-dude also wrote an article about the tree cuttings.  On August 12, 2012 I wrote another article about the deplorable conditions of the cemetery, replete with pictures of dead and dying grass; lack of trees, etc.  In the months that followed I wrote an additional seven stories about the cemetery, and until a new Director was appointed every story that I wrote was about the lack of progress  of restoration to the cemetery.

I interviewed the new Director – Doug Ledbetter–with Michael Turko from KUSI, and the plight of the cemetery was not only aired on KUSI but also written about in both the OBRag and the SDFP.  That was on August 30th, 2013, and Doug stated that things were going to improve – drastically and quickly.

Sometimes, people do things for those they love even though their instinct is to pull back and find an excuse not to do what is asked.

What’s Going On In the Old Proposed VFW Building?

Earlier this week I received a notice from the ABC of a “notice of intention to engage in the sale of alcoholic beverages” in the same building that the VFW wanted to move into last year at 4705 Pt. Loma Ave. Before jumping to conclusions as to what was going to move in I decided to do some preliminary sleuthing and am pleased that I did.

Many of us remember when that building originally housed “Sea and Shore Market.” Years later I still miss the convenience of having a market that close to where I lived. It later was purchased by the owners of “Rancho’s Restaurant” – yes, the same Rancho’s that is on Sunset Cliffs. That became the second Rancho’s in the neighborhood and it was delightful to have it there. It usually had many patrons, and that may have been the downfall of the restaurant because due to of lack of parking space it eventually closed.

Now, Chad and Maja Cline want to open an establishment called “Kodiak” on that very same site. I talked to Chad today and asked him many questions re: the proposed restaurant.   [Read more…]

My Meet-and-Greet with Michael Aguirre

One of the goals I had set for myself during this mayoral election was to meet each of the candidates running for office. The only exception to this goal was a meeting with Kevin Faulconer, since he is my representative already and I know more about him than I need to know before voting.

I have met with David Alvarez – and try as I might to meet with Nathan Fletcher I was thwarted all the way. And although a Michael Aguirre supporter, I felt that he did not have a chance of winning the election and I would need to look at others running for office.

However, I received an invitation to meet and greet Mike Friday at a home in Point Loma, and decided that since I had not made my final decision yet, this was a good time to hear what Mike had to say in person.   [Read more…]

Let’s Ban Erections

A response to Senator Lindsey Graham’s latest abortion proposal

I am tired of men – and stupid women – telling me what I can do – or not do – with my body. In the readings I have done I have never come across anything telling me that the legislature – or the Supreme Court for that matter – were appointed GOD (s) and until they can prove to me that they are the Superior Being, it is time that we women exert our own power to ban the very cause of fetuses – namely the ERECTION.

This is what I propose: Every time a man has an erection not for the purpose of conceiving a child, that penis be cut off. (The conception of a child must be agreed to by the female partner.) The removal must be done by a female mid-wife, female nurse practitioner, or the female receptionist at the front desk. If none of these are available, then it is permissible for the woman that caused the erection to remove it any way she sees fit. This does not have to be done in a licensed hospital; in fact, a back-street alley is preferable. I don’t think that a hanger would work to well, so maybe a dull knife that has not been sterilized would be the weapon of choice.   [Read more…]

What to Do with Your Leftover Halloween Candy

If you are like me and purchased your Halloween candy at CostCo, and not wanting to run out in case your gremlins were going to trick you so you bought two GIANT bags, you probably are wondering what to do with the left-over candy.  After all, how many pieces of candy can YOU eat before you say “enough!”

I’ve got the answer for you! While listening to the news the other night I heard that a group of dentists were collecting the left-over candy to send to our troops overseas.  At first I started laughing, because who would expect a dentist to collect candy for any reason?
