Geo-Poetic Spaces: A Moment of Silence

December 11, 2015 by Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes

When bullets
fly back into guns
blasts
implode into casings
bombs
ascend into planes
missiles return
to grain silos   [Read more…]

Geo-Poetic Spaces: Hitler’s Mustache

December 4, 2015 by Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes

Screencapture from video "Hitler's Mustache"

What happened to Hitler’s mustache?

Was it smuggled
out of Europe by American spies
inside SS Major Wernher von Braun’s cast
along with the Führer’s V-2 rockets?

Was the toothbrush launched to the moon
with Von Braun’s Nazi war crimes
on Apollo 11?   [Read more…]

Geo-Poetic Spaces: Trump’s Toupée

November 27, 2015 by Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes

GPS Trump's Toupée

Isn’t
Donald’s farting mouth that troubles me
his defecating lips
have done more for Democrats
than Quayle did for potatoes
or Palin’s Russian garden
did for geography

Isn’t the millions of dollars
Trump pisses into America’s living rooms
it’s the toupee that Whigs me out   [Read more…]

Geo-Poetic Spaces: Aftermath

November 20, 2015 by Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes

Geo-Poetic Spaces: "Aftermath" still-frame showing munitions stockpile

While the world
paints itself into corners
flowers of evil bloom:

Borders close
troops are called in
security tightens its grip on the free
liberty, abandoned for barricades   [Read more…]

Geo-Poetic Spaces: Miosis

November 13, 2015 by Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes

GPS Miosis

Under glaring lights
pupils constrict
earth gets smaller

Overwhelmed tide pools shrink
breathing becomes labored
fish run out of water
inches from sea   [Read more…]

Geo-Poetic Spaces: Lying Through Teeth

November 6, 2015 by Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes

GPS Lying through teeth

It sucks
when grandma lies through teeth
chewing gums
selling machine embroidered cloth
as handmade lace

Blame it on the financial crisis:
doublespeak
for unnatural selection   [Read more…]

Geo-Poetic Spaces: My Family Thinks I’m a Pot Farmer

October 30, 2015 by Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes

GPS: Pot Farmer

Got to wonder
if my family has a contact high
when they call out of purple haze
to ask if I’m a marijuana farmer

Hydroponically speaking
I don’t have a pot to piss in
not that I’m opposed
to organic chemotherapy
or the buzz of tax revenues
instead of drug wars   [Read more…]

Geo-Poetic Spaces: Visiting the Hala Sultan Tekke (The Mosque of Umm Haram)

October 23, 2015 by Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes

Inscription at the Mosque of Umm Haram

We take off our shoes
before entering the mosque

Bare feet hovering
over red and gold carpet

We pause inside a prayer niche
carved with familiar stars

Geo-Poetic Spaces: Bodysurfing

October 16, 2015 by Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes

Geo-Poetic Spaces: Leaving the Underworld

October 10, 2015 by Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes

GPS : Leaving the Underworld

Why
travel 7,000 miles
through 9 time zones
metal detectors
security checkpoints
layovers?

Endure delays
breathe recirculated air
exchange one currency for another
at inflated rates?

Why
leave the comfort of one’s native language
for a foreign tongue
landing
on an island
surrounded by turbulence
gambled away by offshore money lenders –
it’s geography: A garment
divided between soldiers
of foreign empires?   [Read more…]

Geo-Poetic Spaces: Taken

October 2, 2015 by Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes

St. Paul's Pillar

Lashing out
of imperial robes
at Saint Paul’s pillar
where the founder of Christianity
was whipped by its father

Sun
striking me
with its scorpion tail

One soft drink
from heatstroke and Parousia
when, “A fisher of men,”
limped toward me
rattling small change in a paper cup   [Read more…]

Geo-Poetic Spaces: Never Home Again

September 25, 2015 by Ishmael von Heidrick-Barnes

Airport tarmac through waiting room window

Two months after Europe
I boarded a westbound plane
for map coordinates
that used to be home

Three hours of shuffling
through the labyrinth of London’s
border bureaucracy
to obtain the minotaur’s stamp   [Read more…]

San Diego Free Press Has Suspended Publication as of Dec. 14, 2018

Let it be known that Frank Gormlie, Patty Jones, Doug Porter, Annie Lane, Brent Beltrán, Anna Daniels, and Rich Kacmar did something necessary and beautiful together for 6 1/2 years. Together, we advanced the cause of journalism by advancing the cause of justice. It has been a helluva ride. "Sometimes a great notion..." (Click here for more details)
